A self-described blue-collar counselor, working in a white-collar city, Christopher Kasper, MA, LPC, NCC, is a 9th-year high school counselor at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School (MI), where he works with 9th-12th Grade students (alphabetized caseload). He has been a full-time high school counselor at Pioneer High School since 2016. Previous to Christopher’s current position, he was a middle school counselor Intern at Wagar Middle School (Airport Community Schools), in Carleton, MI., during the length of the 2015-2016 school year.
Born in Toledo, OH, and raised on the Michigan-Ohio border, Christopher is a first-generation college graduate, who earned his Associates of Arts Degree from Monroe County Community College; a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education (Social Studies Major) from Eastern Michigan University; and his Master of Arts Degree in Counseling (School Counseling) also from Eastern Michigan University.
Christopher is passionate about helping to close the access, opportunity, and achievement gaps for historically-excluded students; promoting Career & Technical Education; and helping to guide students through the full length and scope of the college selection process.
As a school counselor, he enjoys professional networking; attending conferences and workshops; taking college courses; collaborating cross-departmentally; and reading the latest education-related materials (at the Secondary and Higher Education levels). In 2020, Christopher completed all supervision requirements for his Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential. In addition, he also holds a current National Certified Counselor credential (NCC).
Christopher’s counseling style is a combination of Person-Centered; Cognitive-Behavioral; Solutions-Focused; Motivational Interviewing (MI); and Strengths-Based approaches, for students. His students inspire him on a daily basis, and he considers himself both blessed and fortunate to work with many future world-influencers and hosts of strong, determined students.
Christopher is also passionate about social justice initiatives, and is active in pro-labor and pro-public education leadership roles through his local Education Association, the AAEA, as a building-level representative and former district-level Secondary Caucus Co-Chair. Additionally, Christopher was a breakout session presenter (Supporting Underrepresented Students in Advanced Courses: How Counselors Can Help Level the Playing Field for Our Students) for the Michigan School Counselor Association’s Fall 2021 Conference, in Lansing, MI; a co-presenter (Supporting 1st Generation Future College Students: How School Counselors and Educators Can Help Bridge the Gap Between High School and College) at the 2022 MACAC Annual Conference, in Rochester, MI– is a 2021-2023 High School Counselor Advisory Board Member for The Ohio State University; was a 2020-2022 Washtenaw Counselor Association Board Member; and was elected in May 2022 as a Michigan School Counselor Association (MSCA) Governing Board Member, as the Board’s new High School Rep.
In his free-time, Christopher enjoys reading; running; rooting for his favorite sports teams (the Detroit Pistons, Detroit Tigers, and Toledo Mud Hens); spending time exploring the beautiful State of Michigan; listening to music and podcasts; outdoor activities; learning Spanish; volunteering; and spending time at the library.
